100 up for Rutherford | Broom to wait another week

07 Nov 2019

Otago Volts opening batsman Hamish Rutherford will bring up 100 first-class matches when he runs out on to University of Otago Oval against Northern Districts tomorrow.

Ground delays in Dunedin abandoned play between the Volts and the Aces without a ball being bowled last week, leaving Rutherford to wait one more week to bring up the milestone.

The 30-year-old has played for English county sides Essex, Derbyshire and Worcestershire as well as Otago and has chalked up over 6,000 runs in his first-class career, averaging almost 36 with a high-score of 239.

Another centurion will have to wait an extra week to bring up his milestone.

Volts veteran Neil Broom currently sits on 99 first-class appearances for Otago but will have to wait another week to reach the milestone having been ruled out of tomorrow’s match through injury.

“Reaching 100 first-class matches in general and for one team are milestones that every player sets out to achieve when they start playing cricket,” said Volts head coach Rob Walter.

“To reach it is a huge accolade for both players and really underlines their commitment to the game as cricketers.

Walter makes two changes to the squad selected for last week’s match against Auckland.

Mark Craig is also unavailable through injury, so Anaru Kitchen and Josh Finnie come in.

Captain Jacob Duffy will be looking to emulate his performance against Wellington two weeks ago.

The 25-year-old took his best first-class figures in the first innings of 7-89 and finished with match figures of 9-106.

Mitch Renwick is also fairing well in first-class cricket.

The wicketkeeper has registered a century, a half-century, and two further scores of 40+ in his last five Plunket Shield innings.

Play gets underway at the University of Otago Oval from 10.30am tomorrow -spectators entry is free.
