Chu and Phillips offered final Volts contracts02 Jul 2019
Dunedin local Max Chu and his former NZ U19 representative team mate Dale Phillips have been offered the last two remaining contracts for the Otago Volts 2019-20 season.
Chu (19) made his first class debut for Otago last season in the Plunket Shield and impressed coach Rob Walter with his wicket keeping skill and tenacious batting. Chu is a promising young keeper and will bring great energy, cricketing skill and leadership capability into the group. Chu has been one of the standouts of a quality group of young players coming through the Otago Cricket pathway, both as a leader and player; having captained the Otago Boys High School first XI as well as Otago U17 and U19 teams in recent years.
Phillips (20) is a highly promising batsman who along with Chu represented NZ U19 at the Cricket World Cup in 2018. He will come under the tutelage of Otago’s experienced batting group which includes; Hamish Rutherford, Neil Broom, Anaru Kitchen and exciting prospects; Nick Kelly, Dean Foxcroft and Josh Finnie.
Head Coach Rob Walter said “Both of these young men fit the purpose of the Volts moving forward, that being, to provide a world leading environment that inspires the best young talent in the country to become quality international cricketers. Both have been identified in the NZC pathway as potential future BLACKCAPS and both have displayed the traits that fit the culture of our group and our long term strategy for the future success of the Volts. We look forward to the positive impact they will have on the group.”
