de Boorder unavailable for 2018/19 contract08 May 2018
Otago Volts stalwart Derek de Boorder has made himself unavailable for contracting ahead of the upcoming domestic season. After a stellar career spanning more than ten seasons, donning the keeping gloves, de Boorder (32) has announced that he will take up a career opportunity with the ANZ Bank in Wellington and will therefore not be considered for a new season contract.
Otago Volts Head Coach Rob Walter spoke in glowing terms of de Boorder. “It is important to note that Derek is not officially retiring so I am loathe to highlight his career successes just yet, however Derek has been a stalwart of the Otago Volts since his arrival in 2007 making many significant contributions along the way. Undoubtedly his presence will be missed ahead of the upcoming season”.
In a message to the team de Boorder announced that he is not retiring but did state, “that after discussions with my family, I will not be making myself available for the contracting process for the coming season. I have been offered a job at ANZ in Wellington. This is something that I have weighed up and the opportunity was too good to turn down. The job looks like it may finish at the end of September into October. As I am unsure of what opportunities may come after that, I cannot commit to anything at present, in terms of cricket. So, I think it is only fair that I give Otago the chance to find a suitable replacement for me”.
On behalf of everyone at Otago Cricket, Walter thanked de Boorder for his enormous contribution to the game, thus far and wished him all the best with this new career opportunity. “We have no doubt that the steely grit and determination that Derek displayed on the field will stand him in good stead and bring him great success in this new venture off it”.
