Volts boost T20 side with new signing

Otago Cricket are excited to announce the signing of Englishman, Ben Cox (Worcestershire) for the upcoming Burger King Super Smash competition. Cox (26) will miss the first round of the competition but will be available for the remainder of the competition.

Cox is an exciting wicketkeeper batsman who lead his side to the Vitality Blast Trophy during the recently completed English summer with key batting displays in the semi-final and in the final. He is commonly regarded as one of the best gloveman in county cricket. Cox has played more than 100 first class games for his county as well as 66 List A games. His T20 career includes 89 matches at county level. A huge amount of cricket for a young man of only 26 years of age.

With the recent loss of experienced players across the Volts set up, head coach Rob Walter believes that Ben will fill an important gap in the playing roster. “ To have a cricketer of the quality and experience of Ben is very exciting for the Volts given the change in staff over the winter. Ben has a strong track record of success and I have no doubt that he will be of great value to the team. Beyond that Ben is a great man and we certainly look forward to welcoming him into the Volts environment” says Walter.

Cox is excited to play in the Burger King Super Smash which has a growing reputation across the globe for its quality. “I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to represent the Volts. I am aware of the proud history of Otago Cricket and the quality of the tournament. I have been lucky enough to enjoy team and personal success in our domestic T20 competition this year and I hope to be involved in a similar way with Otago. On top of that, I’m really looking forward to meeting up with my new teammates and spending time in a beautiful part of the world” says Cox.

Our first game gets underway on Sunday 23 December here at the University of Otago Oval. We are all looking forward to a great Super Smash campaign.
