Volts out to go one step further16 Nov 2019
The Otago Volts will be out to go one step further in the Ford Trophy this summer as they get their one-day campaign underway against Northern Districts at Seddon Park tomorrow.
The Volts fell at the final hurdle in last year’s competition, falling to the Wellington Firebirds in a thrilling final at the University of Otago Oval in December last year.
They head into tomorrow’s match off the back of a strong Plunket Shield performance against Northern Districts earlier in the week where rain prevented them from making a push for a win.
The Volts will be without key members of the squad for the tomorrows match – Mark Craig and Neil Broom are out due to injury, while Hamish Rutherford is away representing New Zealand A in a three-day match against England at Cobham Oval.
Young wicketkeeper Max Chu is selected in a squad for the first time this summer after receiving his first Volts contract in July and will be eager to get involved after brushing shoulder with the likes of Joe Root and Jofra Archer for the New Zealand XI against England earlier in the week.
Allrounder Dean Foxcroft will be a key part of the Volts line-up in white ball cricket this summer.
The 21-year-old, who made the move South from the Central Stags over the winter, was a standout performer in last year’s short form competitions and will be looking to contribute in the runs and wickets columns.
The Volts have a number of players hitting form heading into white ball season.
Nathan Smith notched his maiden first-class century against Northern Districts last week and Michael Rippon was unlucky not to reach the three figures as well, falling two runs shy for 98.
Anaru Kitchen is also in good nick – the allrounder was a standout for the New Zealand XI in two T20 warmup fixtures against England reaching 50* and 48*.
Play gets underway at 2.00pm from Seddon Park tomorrow for a rare day night Ford Tropy match in Hamilton – spectator entry is free.
