Walter Confirmed for Next Two Seasons29 Apr 2019
Otago Volts Head Coach Rob Walter has signed a new contract with Otago Cricket and will continue as Head Coach of the Otago Volts through until the conclusion of the 2020/21 season. CEO Mike Coggan is pleased to have secured the services of Walter for a further two summers. “Rob is an outstanding and experienced coaching technician who has the full support of the playing squad. We have total belief in the structure and quality of the current set up led by Rob and the vision he has set out for both our men’s professional team and the associated pathway feeding the Otago Volts”.
Under the terms of the Master Agreement, Otago Cricket has carried out an extensive process prior to re-signing Walter, a process involving the NZCPA and NZC high performance department. Otago Cricket’s Manager Performance and Talent, Simon Forde has been responsible for leading this process and is excited about Walter’s role over the next two years. “Rob has done a huge amount of work within the Volts environment to date. His knowledge and experience is invaluable. He’s a world class coach. The energy and skill level he brings will assist this young and promising group of players to realise their potential. The players are excited to have his appointment confirmed”.
The Otago Volts are experiencing a transition period with the departure over the past two seasons of older and experienced players. As a result Otago is seeing the emergence of young, talented, albeit inexperienced players and Walter is enthused by what lies ahead. “I am very excited by the next phase of the journey. We have navigated through some tough times as a province and this year we started to show some very positive signs as a team and it will now be vital for us to maintain this momentum and progress even further as a province. I am very grateful to have been entrusted to take the team through this next phase and having the support of the players and staff is very humbling”.
Walter will continue to be contracted by NZC until 31 August, at which point NZC will not continue its coach centralization pilot and Otago Cricket will contract Walter’s services.
Walter guided the Otago Volts to a domestic One Day home final this season, having previously coached the Titans (South Africa) to four titles in three seasons, as well as having spent seven seasons with the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL and worked four years as Assistant Coach to the South African National team.
The 2019/20 pre-season starts from 1 September with domestic contracts in place by 7 July 2019.
