Otago Cricket are delighted to announce the appointment of our new Pathways Programme Head Coach & Manager, Ramesh Subasinghe.
Ramesh (or ‘Ram’ as he is prefers to be known) joins us from Northern Districts, where he previously filled the role of Cricket Development Officer in the Waikato Valley region, as well carrying out coach responsibilities in the Performance environment across both the men’s and women’s game.
At the recent NZC Cricket Awards, Ramesh received the community award for Cricket Development Officer of the Year, attributed to his outstanding service to cricket development across the Waikato Valley Cricket Association.
The Sri-Lankan born 37-year-old brings a wealth of cricketing experience to Otago, developed through his playing days and previous coaching roles. From 2006 – 2012, Ramesh a former pace bowler, played First-Class cricket for the Nondescripts Cricket Club in Colombo. Between 2007 – 2013 Ramesh travelled to the UK to play as an overseas professional.
During his playing days, Ramesh discovered a love for coaching and helping players to achieve their goals. Ramesh jumped at an opportunity to take up a role with Taranaki Cricket in 2015, and in 2018 found himself in a full-time role with Northern Districts.
Ramesh has held multiple coaching roles within Northern Districts’ Associations with their Pathway teams (Hawke Cup teams, U17, U19, and ‘A’ Men).
A big drawcard for Ramesh was the opportunity to work closely with Otago’s Pathway players.
“I am excited to be offered this fantastic role and great opportunity at Otago Cricket. My philosophy as a coach is to help players become better people, and then better cricketers – and I’m looking forward to making this happen in Otago & Southland” said Subasinghe.
Having coached against Otago teams in the past, Ramesh commented that he had been impressed with the way that they played the game.
“Having coached at National Tournaments, I’ve been very impressed with the way that Otago teams play for each other, and for the badge on their chest. I’m very keen to connect with the Otago Whanau and get to understand the Otago way!”
High Performance Manager, Simon Forde, stated that Ramesh’s energy and passion or the game stood out among other applicants.
“Ramesh was the outstanding candidate for the role. What stood out was his energy and love for the game and his desire and determination to make a genuine impact on the pathway players, both male and female, across our region. I am really looking forward to working alongside side Ramesh and welcoming his family to our great city and the wider Otago region” said Forde.
Ramesh would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the Northern Districts whanau and community for a wonderful 3 years.
Ramesh’s young family (including wife Tharenie, and daughter Tia (4)) will move to Dunedin in mid-July.
