Otago Cricket honoured one new Life (posthumously) and four Honorary Members at its 148th Annual General Meeting tonight.
The Association announced a $9,470 loss for the 2023 – 2024 financial year, while Gemma Sheed (first term) and Russ Mawhinney and Brendan Murray were re-appointed for a 2nd 3-year term as Board Directors.
CEO Mike Coggan reflected on the current financial climate and the need to continue to operate prudently. “Although we recorded a small book loss, we were able to improve our balance sheet cash position, this being essential as we navigate some rougher waters over the remainder of this new financial year. The economy is challenging; however, it is important that we continue to invest appropriately in our domestic flagship teams, our pathways programme and community cricket”.
Chairman Russ Mawhinney reflected on a positive year just been. “I am excited about the talent we are finding across Otago and Southland and the future that lies ahead for our men’s and women’s high-performance programmes. We now have 6 centrally contracted BLACKCAPS and WHITEFERNS and one or two others banging at the door of international cricket. It was a highlight seeing the SBS Bank Otago Sparks win the HBJ one day competition for the 2nd time in 3 years. Now we have two of our Sparks as World Cup champions. Regarding the past year, I would like to thank my Board for your great support, and Mike Coggan and the staff for your commitment. Also, to our District Chairmen and your Boards and staff, thanks for the great work you are doing on the ground out there. Collectively the District Associations and our Officials Association make representing Otago Cricket a rewarding experience”.
Former Otago gloveman Barry Milburn presented Life Membership (posthumously) to Billy Ibadulla, for playing, coaching, playing and commentary services regionally and nationally over multiple decades.
Four Honorary memberships were presented to long time stalwarts whose contributions have directly benefited Otago Cricket. Russ Mawhinney presented membership to John Cushen, Brendan Murray presented to Gerard Finnie and Liane Topham Kindley presented membership to Ken Rust. An Honorary membership was also bestowed on Neil Rosenberg, who was not able to be present to accept.
