Emerging Volts & Sparks named for 2022-23

The 2022-23 Emerging Sparks squad at their first training last week.

Otago Cricket’s ‘Emerging Players Programme’ is designed for pathway players whose potential has been identified as a future domestic cricketer based on their skills & behaviours throughout the previous cricket season.

The programme is a 12-week winter pre-season programme, that assists players in developing holistically for the 22-23 season and beyond.

All players will receive access to coaching from Otago Cricket Performance Staff, Strength & Conditioning support, mental skills, and more.

Players outside of Dunedin will receive support from Otago Cricket’s Network Coaching programme and will receive remote assistance from our Strength & Conditioning Coach.

Otago Cricket’s Coaching Network has been developed over the past few years, based on the need to be able to service identified players throughout Otago’s regions.

Otago Cricket Pathways Head Coach & Manager, Ramesh Subasinghe, in explaining the purpose of the ‘Emerging Players Programme’ described it as a programme that prioritises a holistic approach to athlete development – “ we are trying to develop all facets of the individual to be great in all that we do,” he said.

This philosophy connects with Otago Cricket's Values of creating G.R.E.A.T. individuals (Growth Mindset, Resilience, Enjoyment, Accountability, and Team First).

“These players have all been selected because of their potential to play cricket at the highest level, and we look forward to supporting their development.” Subasinghe concluded.

Otago Cricket GM Performance, Steve Martin, touched on the growth of the Emerging Players Programme over the past couple of seasons.

“It is great to see the growth of the Volts and Sparks Emerging Players Programme this season,” said Martin.

“Identified talent from Dunedin, Southland, North Otago and Otago Country will receive amazing support through this programme, carried out by our Performance Staff & Network Coaching programme, meaning that players can be supported wherever they reside,” Martin continued.

“It’s great to see so many players across Otago receiving this support and developing into GREAT individuals.” Martin concluded.
